Well, Columbus and I really just swapped senior citizens. It's a race to see who ends up on the dl first, Thome vs Hoffman. I needed a closer and one less roster spot for hitters and I think Columbus needed a big bat in his lineup. Thome would have led his team in power numbers last year.

As far as the closer swap goes, at first blush I'd say Gary ends up the winner. Simply because Valverde has nobody to push him for his spot as the closer. Barring a meltdown it's his for the rest of the year. Saito is 38 years old and has one of the games best closing prospects waiting in the wings in Broxton. I think it's a matter of when not if Broxton assumes the closers role.

Good analysis. These were pretty much ho-hum trades. Minor moves toward a bigger goal, I guess.
